Abstract

Cancer was a leading cause of death worldwide and had a significant impact on patients and their families. Families caring for cancer patients experienced high levels of physical and emotional stress, requiring effective coping strategies. Social support played an important role in helping families cope with these challenges. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design with 84 respondents selected through consecutive sampling methods. The instruments used were the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) to measure social support and The Brief COPE Inventory Short Version to assess family coping strategies. Data analysis was conducted using Kendall's tau-b correlation test. Results: The majority of family coping strategies were in the moderate category (65.5%), and the social support received was mostly in the high category (46.4%). The results of statistical tests showed that social support had no significant correlation with problem-focused coping strategies (p = 0.107) and avoidant coping (p = 0.541). However, there was a significant correlation between social support and emotion-focused coping strategies (p = 0.007). Conclusion: Social support had a significant correlation with emotion-focused coping strategies but not with problem-focused or avoidant coping strategies. Nurses were expected to identify family coping strategies and provide education related to patient care skills and emotional stress management to improve the quality of life of families of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy
