Abstract
Rubber liquid waste has a fairly high organic content with a Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) level of 1907 mg/L. Processing of rubber industrial liquid waste containing high COD levels requires an effective treatment method. This study aims to analyze the efficiency and effect of reducing COD levels using the Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) system through variations in Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) and the addition of Poly Aluminum Chloride (PAC) coagulant. The method used in this study was a laboratory-scale experiment using variations in HRT of 4 and 6 hours, aeration of 2 and 3 hours, and the addition of PAC of 20 mg/L. The results of this study indicate that the addition of PAC coagulant and a longer HRT time can significantly increase the efficiency of COD reduction. The highest efficiency was obtained in a combination of 6 hours HRT, 3 hours aeration, and the addition of PAC of 20 mg/L with a COD removal efficiency of 86%. The results of statistical tests using multiple linear regression models showed that the PAC, HRT, and aeration variabels had a significant effect on reducing COD levels. Thus, the combination of biological treatment of SBR and the addition of PAC is effective in reducing COD levels in liquid rubber waste.
