Investigating Self Esteem Values in the English For Nusantara Textbook for Grade VIII

Abstract

The researcher investigating self-esteem values in the English for nusantara textbook for grade eight students that was published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia. The data form using reading text and dialogues, activites or instructions and visual ilustrations. The number consists of 6 reading texts and dialogues, 14 activities or instructions, and 14 visual illustrations. The researcher analyzed the self-esteem by using data form of the textbook by using content analysis. The data from were analyzed based on two types of self-esteem by Maslow (1943,1954), they are the internal self-esteem including self respect, confidence and respect. The external self-esteem including reputation, recognition and achievement. The findings showed that the number consists of 6 reading texts and dialogues, 14 activities or instructions, and 14 visual illustrations. It was discovered based on data code reading text contain of 6 internal self-esteem and 5 external selfesteem, language activity containing of 14 internal self-esteem and 16 external selfesteem, visual artifact containing of 14 internal self-esteem and 13 external self – esteem. From the data has been show the external has been massive input on the textbook by using data form language activity. This is in line with the need of learner as a foreign learner in the learning process. The use external tend to present the existence of worksheet leading question and social project for learner. From those activity can combine all the language skill need as the foreign learner.
