Abstract
This study examines conventional implicature in political discourse leading up to
the 2024 elections on the BBC News Indonesia website. The focus of the research
is to describe the types of utterances containing conventional implicature and to
describe the functions of such implicature within the discourse. This study
employs a qualitative descriptive method, with data consisting of phrases and
clause indicating the presence of conventional implicature. The data were
collected through documentation techniques and analyzed using the interactive
model by Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data presentation,
and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings reveal that the types of
utterances containing conventional implicature include declarative, interrogative,
imperative, and exclamative forms. Furthermore, the functions of conventional
implicature in the discourse encompass assertive, directive, expressive,
commissive, and declarative functions. These findings highlight the crucial role of
conventional implicature in enriching the interpretation of political campaign
discourse. Through the use of conventional implicature, messages that are not
explicitly stated can be delivered more effectively and appropriately, aligning with
the political and social contexts of the 2024 elections. Thus, this research
contributes to understanding the role of language as a persuasive communication
tool in political discourse, particularly in conveying implicit meanings to readers
