| dc.description.abstract | This research aims to analyze female independence as reflected in the female characters in Henry James’s The Portrait of a Lady. The novel explores women’s freedom, personal choices, and struggles to maintain their independence within the social and cultural expectations of the nineteenth century. The main focus of this research is to examine how female independence is portrayed through the characters’ decisions, attitudes, and relationships with other characters. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, using the novel as the primary data source. The data are collected through close reading, note-taking, and identification of relevant dialogues, narrative descriptions, and events that illustrate female independence. The analysis is supported by literary criticism and relevant theories of feminism, particularly those concerning women’s autonomy, freedom of choice, and resistance to patriarchal expectations. The findings are expected to demonstrate that female independence is represented through women’s desire to determine their own lives, pursue personal freedom, and make decisions according to their individual aspirations. Isabel Archer, as the central female character, represents a woman who values independence and seeks to explore opportunities beyond conventional social boundaries. However, her experiences also reveal the limitations of female autonomy when personal choices intersect with marriage, social pressure, and gender inequality. Through the portrayal of female characters, James presents female independence as a complex struggle between individual freedom and societal expectations. In conclusion, The Portrait of a Lady illustrates that female independence involves not only the ability to make personal decisions but also the courage to confront social constraints and accept the consequences of those decisions. This research contributes to a broader understanding of female autonomy and women’s experiences in nineteenth-century literature. | |
