| dc.description.abstract | Introduction: Nursing students frequently encounter demanding theoretical workloads and clinical challenges that can induce significant academic stress. Inadequate adaptation to stressors may precipitate suicidal ideation. The variability in students' responses to these pressures is largely influenced by individual personality traits. This study examines the relationship between academic stress and suicidal ideation, along with the moderating role of Big Five personality’s traits, among undergraduate nursing students at Universitas Jember. Method: This study employed a cross-sectional correlational design. A total of 233 undergraduate nursing students were selected via proportionate stratified random sampling. Data were collected using the Perceived Sources of Academic Stress (PASS), the Suicidal Ideation Scale (SIS), and the 10-item Big Five Inventory (BFI-10). Data were analyzed using the Kendall’s Tau-c correlation test with a significance level of α = 0,05 Result: Findings indicated that 41.2% of respondents exhibited a moderate level of academic stress, while 54.5% demonstrated no suicidal ideation. Openness to Experience emerged as the most dominant personality trait (31.8%). Correlation analysis indicated a statistically significant result with a p-value of < 0.001. A correlation coefficient (r) of 0.285 indicated a positive and significant but weak relationship. Conclusion: Elevated academic stress significantly triggers suicidal ideation among nursing students, although within a low correlation strength. The adaptation process is heavily moderated by internal vulnerability and personality-based factors. Neuroticism acts as an amplifier, whereas Extraversion and Conscientiousness serve as effective buffer. Furthermore, Openness to Experience functions as a situational amplifier, while the role of Agreeableness remains inconclusive due to data limitations. | |
