Analysis on Discrimination of Demigod In Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson And The Olympians: The Lightning Thief

Abstract

This study analyzes the issue of discrimination experienced by demigods in the novel Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. Using a sociological approach as well as Stuart Hall's representation theory and Theodorson & Theodorson's discrimination, this research highlights how social injustice, stereotypes and inequality are displayed through demigod characters, such as Percy Jackson. In this novel, the demigods are depicted as experiencing unfair treatment from both the gods and human society due to their half-god and half human origins. This study divides the forms of discrimination into two: direct discrimination (such as harsh and demeaning treatment from the gods) and indirect discrimination (through the education system or neglect of identity by the parents of the demigods). The analysis shows that this novel is not just an adventure fiction, but also a social critique of the marginalization of minority groups, while inviting readers to understand the importance of equality, courage, and self-acceptance.
