This study analyzes the representation of oppression experienced by the female characters in Sharon M. Draper’s Copper Sun. By using Hall’s representation theory, Young’s Five Faces of Oppression, and Foucault’s discursive approach, the researcher investigates the novel to examine the forms of oppression experienced by Amari and Polly within the system of slavery and hierarchical power relations. Texts, dialogues, and narratives are scrutinized through a qualitative descriptive method. Findings reveal that Amari experiences all five forms of oppression, while Polly experiences only three forms of oppression. The differences in their experiences are shaped by the hierarchical structure of slavery, which positions individuals according to race, social status, and power. This study concludes that Copper Sun represents the abuse of power through systems of slavery and oppression while emphasizing resistance against injustice and affirming every individual’s right to live freely and with dignity.
