Abstract

Critical thinking is an essential competency in science education. However, previous studies indicate that the critical thinking skills of junior high school students in Indonesia remain low. Research findings report that Grade VIII students achieved only 49.29%, Grade VII students reached 56.25%, and another study recorded an average score of 42, all of which fall into the low category. These conditions underscore the need for learning media that can promote higher-order thinking through relevant and contextual experiences. This study aims to develop digital science learning media based on Smart Apps Creator (SAC) that integrates the local context of coffee processing to improve students’ critical thinking skills. The development followed the ADDIE model. Media validity was assessed by expert validators, practicality was evaluated through learning implementation observations, and effectiveness was examined using pretest–posttest assessments and student response questionnaires. The results show that the media obtained a validity score of 94% (highly valid), a practicality score of 93% (highly practical), an N-gain score of 0.70 (medium category), and a student response score of 86.5% (very good). These findings indicate that the SAC-based digital media is feasible, practical, and effective in supporting science learning and enhancing junior high school students’ critical thinking skills.
