Polemik 4 Pulau dalam Laman Berita Kumparan News: Analisis Wacana Kritis Model Roger Fowler

Abstract

This study analyses the polemic surrounding four islands in the kumparannews news page. The four islands that are the subject of controversy between the provinces of Aceh and North Sumatra are Lipan Island, Panjang Island, Mangkir Gadang Island, and Mangkir Ketek Island. This study uses Roger Fowler's critical discourse analysis approach, which emphasises vocabulary (classification vocabulary, limiting vocabulary, discourse battle vocabulary, marginalisation vocabulary) and grammar (passive transformation, nominalisation transformation, transitive model, intransitive models, relational models) to reveal the ideology, power, and social representations contained in the news. The research method used was descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques in the form of news documentation related to the polemic over the four islands published in KumparanNews. The results of the study indicate that KumparanNews' reporting tends to frame the controversy over the four islands from a certain perspective that has the potential to influence readers' perceptions of the territorial conflict, both in terms of determining which party is positioned as the dominant party and which party is marginalised. These findings confirm that language in the mass media not only functions as a means of conveying information, but also as a tool for shaping social reality and spreading ideology. Language in news texts plays an important role in shaping meaning, influencing readers' perspectives, and constructing social reality regarding the conflict in the region. This research is expected to contribute to critical linguistic studies, particularly in understanding the role of mass media in constructing social reality through news discourse. This research could be further developed by expanding data sources, not only from KumparanNews but also from other media outlets, to obtain a more diverse framing comparison. Furthermore, other critical discourse analysis approaches besides Roger Fowler's could be used to enrich the analytical perspective.
