Abstract

The phenomenon of poverty in laborer families is not only related to economic limitations alone, but is also influenced by value patterns, habits, and perspectives that develop in daily life, which is referred to as the culture of poverty. This condition can reinforce the cycle of poverty that continues across generations. This study aims to analyze how the reality of the culture of poverty is depicted in families of garbage porters, as well as the factors that cause the persistence of poverty despite long-term work. The method used is a qualitative approach with data collection techniques through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, using Oscar Lewis's theory of the culture of poverty. The results of the study show that the characteristics of the culture of poverty they experience form a recurring cycle that originates from inherited poverty. As well as the persistence of a culture of living in poverty that is not only influenced by economic limitations but also by patterns of values, habits, and survival adaptations that have been passed down through generations, indirectly hindering social mobility. The conclusion of this study is that the culture of poverty experienced is closely related to the presence of cultural and structural influences that operate in balance, thereby shaping a reality that impacts their socio-economic conditions. This plays a role in maintaining the state of poverty, hence the need for government intervention.
