This study identifies four primary reasons behind adaptation choices: the structural demands of the shift from literary to cinematic storytelling, the need to make the mythology accessible to a wider audience, cinema's unique ability to communicate through audiovisual signs, and Peter Jackson's own creative vision as interpreter of Tolkien's world. This study examines how the mythological world of The Fellowship of the Ring was adapted into Peter Jackson's 2001 film, and why certain adaptation choices were made. It uses Linda Hutcheon's theory of adaptation as a creative transformation rather than a copy. The findings suggest that while film cannot fully replicate the narrative depth of the novel, the mythological essence of each setting is not lost and is often amplified through the unique expressive power of cinema. This study identifies four reasons why people make certain choices when adapting books into films. These reasons include the fact that films and books tell stories differently, the need to make stories more accessible to a wider audience, the special way films can show and tell something using sound and images, and Peter Jackson's own ideas about how to bring Tolkien's world to life.
