Peran Two Shot dalam Membangun Kedekatan Romantis pada Film You Are The Apple of My Eye (2025)

Abstract

Film is an audiovisual medium capable of conveying emotions and interpersonal relationships through visual language. One of the cinematographic techniques frequently employed to depict interactions between characters is the two shot, which presents two characters within a single frame. This study aims to analyze the role of the two shot, supported by mise en scene, in constructing romantic intimacy in the Korean film You Are the Apple of My Eye (2025). This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach. The primary data consisted of selected scenes from the film containing two shot compositions involving the main characters, Goo Jin-woo and Oh Seon-ah. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and literature review, and analyzed using Blain Brown's cinematography theory and Bordwell and Thompson's concept of mise en scène. The findings indicate that the two shot plays a significant role in visually representing the gradual development of the romantic relationship between the two main characters. Out of 79 identified two shot compositions, six representative scenes were selected to illustrate the progression of romantic intimacy, beginning with their first encounter and continuing through emotional closeness, mutual attraction, romantic affection, farewell, and reunion. The analysis demonstrates that visual elements such as character positioning, physical distance, eye contact, blocking, lighting, setting, and costume work together to reinforce emotional intimacy without relying solely on dialogue. In conclusion, the two shot, supported by mise en scène, functions not merely as a framing technique but also as an effective visual storytelling device for communicating the development of romantic relationships. These findings contribute to cinematography studies by highlighting how visual composition can effectively construct emotional meaning and character relationships in narrative films.
