Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a long-term lung condition defined by a constant limitation of airflow and difficulties in breathing, which can disrupt everyday activities and lessen the quality of life for patients. The use of inhalers plays a crucial role in the management of COPD because they provide medication straight to the lungs. Various inhaler types can affect the efficiency of medication delivery and the control of symptoms. This research intended to examine the connection between the type of inhaler and the dyspnea severity in COPD patients receiving care at RSD dr. Soebandi Jember. An observational analytical approach was used in this study, employing a cross-sectional design that included 88 COPD sufferers who fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The study's variables consisted of the types of inhalers, which included no inhaler usage, Dry Powder Inhalers (DPI), Metered Dose Inhalers (MDI), and Soft Mist Inhalers (SMI), while dyspnea severity was evaluated using the Modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) scale. The data analysis was conducted using the Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by the Mann-Whitney test with Bonferroni adjustments and a Spearman correlation assessment. The results from the spearman correlation analysis revealed notable negative relationships between not using inhalers and MDI use (r = −0.380; p = 0.003), as well as between not using inhalers and SMI use (r = −0.455; p = 0.006). The findings of this research indicate that the type of inhaler is closely linked to the intensity of dyspnea experienced by patients with COPD.
