Abstract
The study analyzes Neil Gaiman’s Coraline through the lens of John G. Cawelti’s formula theory, exploring how its strategic use of formulaic structure contributes to its success in gaining society’s attention. This research examines the intrinsic parts of the novella—plot, setting, characters and characterizations, also illustrations—to reveal how these elements are intentionally constructed to engage readers and align with one of Cawelti’s five genre typologies.
This study also investigate the correlation between formulaic writing and the cultural issues and concerns present at the time of its publication, specifically societal fears of technological paranoia around the world, with a special focus on the United Kingdom. The early 21st century experienced swift technological growth, which, whilst offering great advantages, also created widespread fears regarding the loss of personal autonomy and other unpredictable consequences. The study explores both intrinsic and extrinsic elements to understand this connection in light of Cawelti’s four hypotheses regarding formula and culture.
The analysis concludes that Coraline incorporates both horror and fantasy elements according to Cawelti’s typology of alien beings or state, thereby categorizing it as dark fantasy. The importance of dark fantasy in Coraline proves in its relationship to all Cawelti’s four hypotheses of formula and culture, as evidenced through each of these frameworks. Coraline affirms societal anxieties while providing a solution through escapism, enabling readers to examine limitations and question their understanding of escape, while also bringing fresh ideas to culture by presenting a fantasy for children and a horror for adults. These cultural anxieties largely motivated the market for fantasy literature, explaining the genre’s rebirth at the time of the novella’s release. This approach shows how well-crafted formulaic patterns may make literature a culturally relevant medium that entertains yet encourages, making it an influential popular literature work.
