Abstract

The phenomenon of stigmatization of mental retardation is currently considered one of the most important problems faced by parents, especially mothers. Societal stigma can cause mothers to ostracize their own children and feel ashamed for having a mentally retarded family member. The existence of community stigma on mentally retarded children supports the existence of self-stigma in mothers. This study aims to analyze the relationship between self-stigma and the acceptance of mothers who have mentally retarded children. This study used a correlational design with a cross sectional approach. Respondents in this study were 74 respondents who used total sampling technique. The research instruments used were Affiliate Stigma Sclale (ASS) and Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire (PARQ). The results showed that most respondents had low self stigma with 42 respondents (56.8%) and 65 respondents (87.8%) had a high acceptance category. Data analysis was performed using Kendall’s tau b correlation. This study showed a significant relationship between self-stigma and acceptance of mothers who have mentally retarded children (p=0.027) with a weak and negative correlation (r=-0.259) which means that the lower the self-stigma, the higher the acceptance of mothers who have mentally retarded children. Mothers who don’t internalize stigma will provide positive and adaptive perceptions and behaviors towards their mentally retarded children. Mothers who have low self stigma can improve their well-being and self confidence so that it has a good impact on the relationship between parents and mentally retarded children
