Abstract
This study aims to describe the forms of sarcastic implicature, the responses to
sarcastic implicature, and their utilization in teaching anecdotal texts to senior high
school students. The object of this research is the comment section of political news
posts in the field of education on the CNN Indonesia Instagram account. This
research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The data
consist of sentences indicated to contain sarcastic implicature, while the data
sources are netizens’ comments on seven political news posts published on the CNN
Indonesia Instagram account from August to October 2025. Data were collected
using documentation techniques and analyzed using a pragmatic approach,
particularly Grice’s theory of conversational implicature. The results show that the
forms of sarcastic implicature include generalized conversational implicature,
scalar conversational implicature, and particularized conversational implicature.
Generalized conversational implicature appears in the forms of criticizing,
mocking, and disparaging; scalar conversational implicature appears in the forms
of strengthening and generalizing; while particularized conversational implicature
appears in the forms of wordplay, insinuating, and encoding. The responses to
sarcastic implicature consist of responses that comply with the cooperative
principle and responses that violate the cooperative principle by violating one or
more conversational maxims. Furthermore, sarcastic implicature found in the
comment section of political news posts on the CNN Indonesia Instagram account
can be utilized as alternative teaching materials for anecdotal texts in senior high
schools, as they contain elements of social criticism, humor, and implicit meaning
that are contextual and relevant to students’ lives.
