Abstract

Obesity is a health problem often associated with psychological disorders, one of which is Binge Eating Disorder (BED). BED is characterized by short episodes of excessive eating accompanied by feelings of loss of control over eating, and is not accompanied by compensatory behaviors such as bulimia nervosa. This study aims to determine the characteristics of binge eating disorder (BED) in obese individuals in the Kaliwates Community Health Center (Puskesmas), Jember Regency. This study was a quantitative descriptive study. The study sample consisted of 100 obese individuals, selected using a non-probability purposive sampling technique. The data collection process used the Binge Eating Scale (BES) questionnaire. The results showed that the majority of obese individuals had non-/mild binge eating (BE) problems, namely 56 people (56%). This indicates that most respondents did not report episodes of compulsive overeating, did not experience significant distress related to eating, did not feel a consistent loss of control, and did not feel guilt or regret after overeating, which are not in accordance with the characteristics of BED. This is based on respondents' perceptions that overeating is a pleasurable activity that only occurs occasionally, rather than a loss of control. This condition may be due to obesity's high health awareness, adaptive coping mechanisms, and positive social and environmental support that foster these adaptive coping strategies. This study concluded that most obese individuals have non or mild binge eating problems.
