Abstract

The high level of coffee consumption in Indonesia is due to the fact that this beverage has become part of the lifestyle and routine. However, there are undesirable effects of consuming coffee, including the appearance of palpitations (pounding heart) and increased blood pressure. The direct effect of caffeine on the cardiovascular system will affect the work of the respiratory system. The addition of corn to coffee can have a positive effect on vasodilation due to its ferulic acid and antioxidant content. Corn is also used as an alternative to coffee blends because it provides a distinctive flavor and aroma. This study was conducted to determine the comparison of the effects of consumption of robusta brewed coffee and robusta corn coffee on the heart and respiratory functions of students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Jember. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a time-series design at five different measurement times on 60 research subjects who would be divided into two treatment groups. Data analysis techniques in this study used the repeated measure ANOVA test and the Friedman test. The results showed that robusta coffee consumption had more significant changes over time in pulse rate, blood pressure, and respiratory rate measurements when compared to robusta corn coffee consumption.
