Abstract
Writing quality textbooks requires attention to various aspects, one of which is the
readability aspect. However, it is undeniable that the readability of textbooks in
junior high schools is estimated to be low. One effort that can be made to overcome
this is to review the readability aspect of textbooks to determine their suitability to
the class level of students. This study aims to describe the level of readability of
discourse in textbook Mahir Berbahasa Indonesia SMP/MTs grade VII Independent
Curriculum published by Erlangga. Textbook readability was measured using the
Fry Graph formula and Fog Index. This type of research is quantitative descriptive.
The data in this study were in the form of discourses from the beginning, middle,
and end of the book as many as 100 words from each discourse to ensure that the
readability analysis covers the entire contents of the textbook representatively. The
data collection technique used documentation techniques and purposive sampling.
Data analysis was conducted by means of data reduction, data presentation, and
drawing conclusions. The results of the study showed that the level of readability
based on the Fry Graph formula was in the area of 7, which was suitable for
students in grades VI, VII, and VIII. Meanwhile, the readability results based on the
Fog Index formula were 5.7, which was included in the easy category. Thus,
textbook Mahir Berbahasa Indonesia SMP/MTs grade VII Independent Curriculum
published by Erlangga has good and appropriate readability quality so that it can
be recommended as teaching material in schools
