Abstract
The research examined the effectiveness of the TaRL approach in teaching news
writing in the 11th-grade hospitality class at SMK Negeri 3 Jember. The purpose of
this study was to describe the processes and results of teaching news writing both
with and without the TaRL approach. This study employs a mixed-methods research
design of the sequential explanatory type, consisting of a quasi experimental
quantitative approach and a descriptive qualitative approach. The data were
obtained from the researcher’s observations, test scores, and student completed
questionnaires. The results indicated that instruction in news-text writing in the
experimental class, which implemented the TaRL approach, fostered independent
learning, whereas the control class, which did not implement the approach,
remained dependent on the facilitator. The questionnaire results yielded a
significance value of p = 0.000 < 0.05, demonstrating a significant difference
between the experimental class and the control class, with the experimental class
performing better. The test results also produced a significance value of p = 0.023
< 0.05, further indicating a significant difference between the experimental class
and the control class, with the experimental class performing better. Thus, the TaRL
approach was effective in teaching news writing in the 11th-grade hospitality class
at SMK Negeri 3 Jember.
