Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms and factors causing code-mixing in interactions between sellers and buyers in traditional markets in Banyuwangi City. Code-mixing is a common linguistic phenomenon found in bilingual communities, especially in areas rich in regional languages such as Banyuwangi, where the majority of the population speaks Indonesian, Javanese, Osing, and Madurese. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. Data were collected through direct observation and interviews with ten market traders. Data analysis was carried out by classifying the forms of code-mixing based on the inserted linguistic units and identifying the underlying factors through the interviews. The findings of this study reveal three forms of code-mixing in interactions between sellers and buyers: word insertion, phrase insertion, and clause insertion. Factors contributing to code-mixing include adapting to the conversation partner, building familiarity and a relaxed atmosphere, learning one language, facilitating communication, and keeping up with the times. Code-mixing in market interactions functions not only as a means of communication but also as a reflection of the social and cultural identity of the Banyuwangi community.
