dc.description.abstractStructure and adsorption capacity of aluminum pillared Bentonites were studied via intercalation of Al13 polycations into bentonite. The Al13 polycation was prepared at OH/Al ratio of 2 and the aluminum concentrations are 5, 10 and 15 mmol per gram bentonite. The structural characterization of pillared bentonite was collected by means of XRF, FTIR, XRD and GSA. Adsorption capacity was evaluated using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm model. The XRF data, FTIR spectra, and XRD diffractograms of activated bentonite indicate that activation process successfully reduced calcium content within the bentonite interlayer. The XRF compositional data for the aluminum-pillared bentonite shows an increase in aluminum concentration with increasing precursor concentration. The FTIR spectra and XRD diffractograms of the aluminum-pillared bentonite reveal that the pillarization process keeps the primary framework structure of the bentonite. The XRD data of the aluminum-pillared bentonite indicates an expansion of the basal spacing. Conversely, the BET/BJH analysis shows that the specific surface area of pillared bentonite decreases. However, the pore volume and average pore size data increase after the pillarization process. Finally, the pore distribution data confirm the creation of new pores after pillarization. The analysis of the adsorption capacity for the aluminum-pillared bentonite shows a very small difference compared to the adsorption capacity values of the activated bentonite based on the Langmuir and Freundlich models.
