Abstract
Cataract stage refers to the severity of cataracts. Senile cataracts have four
stages: incipient/early, immature, mature, and hypermature. Senile cataracts will
progress if the patient is unaware of their risk factors. One factor that can
increase the risk of cataracts is smoking. The toxins in cigarettes can potentially
damage body cells. Smokers have a twice-higher risk of developing cataracts
compared to non-smokers. This study aims to determine the relationship between
smoking behavior and senile cataract stage. The instrument used to measure
smoking behavior variables was the Glover-Nilsson Smoking Behavior
Questionnaire and the smoking degree variable was the Brinkman Index, while
for the cataract stage variable, hospital medical record data was used. Based on
the results of the study, it was found that most of the smoking behavior of senile
cataract patients was in the category of very heavy smoking behavior (34.1%) and
the degree of smoking of senile cataract sufferers was in the moderate smoking
category (56,1%) . Then in the senile cataract stage, the results of the study
showed that most were already in the mature senile cataract stage (33.6%). The
results of the Kendall Tau statistical test showed a p value = 0.001. This indicates
that Ha is accepted. In the sense that there is a significant relationship between
the smoking behavior and degree of smoking variable and the stage of senile
cataract in senile cataract patients at the Jember Type B Regional Hospital. So
that as a nurse, you can provide education or nursing promotion about the
dangers of smoking in senile cataract patients, especially senile cataract patients,
in order to prevent the occurrence of stages in these patients.
