Aktivitas Pertambangan Pasir di Kabupaten Lumajang Tahun 1998-2017

Abstract

This study examines sand mining activities in Lumajang Regency from 1998 to 2017 using an environmental history approach and political economy theory. Lumajang Regency has a very large potential of volcanic sand originating from the activity of Mount Semeru, particularly from the Mujur, Glidik, and Rejali River Basins. This mining potential has encouraged the development of sand mining activities that play an important role in the local and regional economy. This study aims to examine the background of the emergence of sand mining, the dynamics of sand mining activities, and the resulting socio-economic and environmental impacts. The research employs the historical research method, which includes the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Sand mining activities increased significantly following the enactment of Regional Regulation No. 5 of 1998 and contributed to local tax revenues while creating employment opportunities for the community. However, sand mining activities have also generated various problems, such as social conflict, environmental degradation, and the proliferation of illegal mining. The peak of mining-related problems in Lumajang was marked by the violence experienced by Salim Kancil in 2015. This study concludes that sand mining in Lumajang Regency provides substantial economic benefits but requires stricter management and supervision to ensure sustainability and to prevent harm to both the community and the environment.
