Abstract

Oral ulcers, particularly recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) and traumatic ulcers, are still commonly reported. Currently, the use of commonly topical antiinflammatory therapies has limitations and potential side effects when ingested. Bay leaves (Syzygium polyanthum (Wight.) Walp) contain bioactive compounds with anti-inflammatory properties, while hyaluronic acid plays a crucial role in wound healing by modulating inflammation and promoting tissue repair. This study aimed to determine the effect of an orabase containing a combination of bay leaf extract and hyaluronic acid on the number of macrophages in traumatic ulcers of Wistar rats. Traumatic ulcers were thermally induced on the buccal mucosa, followed by daily application of the combined orabase in the treatment group, no treatment in the negative control group, and Kenalog in the positive control group. Observations were conducted on days 3, 6, and 9 post-induction by histological examination using Hematoxylin-Eosin staining. The results showed that application of the combined orabase for six days significantly reduced the number of macrophages compared to the negative control.
