dc.description.abstracthe increase in household waste remains a critical environmental issue in urban areas, including in Patrang District, Jember Regency, Indonesia. The lack of waste management at the source and inadequate community participation hinder the implementation of a sustainable waste management system. This study aims to measure the production and composition of household waste and analyze community participation in waste management towards a zero waste. A quantitative approach was applied through direct measurement of waste in accordance with Indonesian National Standard 3964:2025 in 32 households over eight consecutive days, supplemented by questionnaires completed by 100 respondents selected using purposive random sampling. Statistical analysis was used to describe waste production and composition, while logistic regression analysis tested the influence of sociodemographic factors on community knowledge, attitudes, and practices. The results showed an average waste of 0.215 kg/person/day (4.77 liters/person/day), with the main composition being food waste 61.56%, plastic sheets 9.99%, paper/cardboard 8.35%, hard plastic 5.39%, garden waste 5.34%, cloth 2.37%, residues 2.13%, glass 1.72%, wood 1.12%, B3 0.85%, metal 0.67%, and diapers 0.53%. Significant participation in knowledge (age 31–40 years, p=0.0356; unemployment, p=0.0549; income IDR 2–3 million, p=0.0548; higher education for B3, p=0.0103), attitudes toward composting (secondary education, p=0.0815), and waste management actions (unemployed, p=0.0435; age >60 years, p=0.0897; higher education, p=0.0995). Other aspects were not significant (p>0.10). Community participation was dominated by knowledge, with attitudes and actions not yet evenly distributed. Education, age, and employment status played an important role in knowledge and some waste management behaviors.
