This thesis investigates the existence of gender stereotypes in Cars 3 movie. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Fairclough (1989) is used as theoretical framework to examine the embedded gender stereotypes in the movie’s visual and linguistics elements. Generic Structure by Halliday and Hasan is also used to find the movie’s structure and to choose the data. Further, the visual elements data are analyzed by using Systemic Functional Visual Element by Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006). Moreover, Systemic Functional Linguistics by Halliday (2004) is used to find the meaning behind the linguistics elements data. There are several supporting theories such as theory of gender focused on dominance approach, power, the concept of gender stereotypes, and socio-cultural context that are used to interpret the data analysis. This thesis uses qualitative method and documentary research strategy. The data are in the form of movie’ shots and clauses that are collected from a movie entitled Cars 3 as the data source.
