dc.description.abstractThis study aims to improve students’ learning outcomes on the topic of relations and functions through the implementation of the problem based learning (PBL) model. The type of research used is Classroom Action Research (CAR), which was conducted in two cycles. The subjects of this study were 34 students of class VIII A at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Jember. Based on initial observations, it was found that students’ understanding of relations and functions was still low. Students had difficulties distinguishing between relations and functions, determining relation pairs correctly, and interpreting word problems that required deeper conceptual understanding. In addition, many students appeared passive, less engaged in discussions, and not active in expressing their opinions during the learning process. The results of the study showed that the application of the PBL model was able to improve students’ learning outcomes and learning activities. The average score increased from 50.5 in the pre-cycle to 70.3 in cycle I, and 82.4 in cycle II. The percentage of classical mastery improved from 47% in the pre-cycle to 82% in cycle II. Student activity also increased from 70.3% to 89.34%, while teacher activity increased from 66.25% to 87.36%. Thus, the problem based learning model is effective in improving students’ learning outcomes and learning activities on the topic of relations and functions.
