The Visual Grammar Analysis of Male Gaze on Banyuwangi Culture Every Week’s Pamphlets

Abstract

This thesis discusses the presence of gandrung dancer in every pamphlet in Banyuwangi events especially Banyuwangi Culture Every Week event. The events held every year with different themes but always includes the gandrung dancer. This research aims to find out the meaning of the images in the pamphlet and to know the role of gandrung dancer in every pamphlet. This research belongs to qualitative research that produces descriptive data. It uses documentary method that analyzes existing document to gather information and insight relevant to a research question. The data used are pamphlet of Banyuwangi Culture Every Week in 2021 to 2023. The data are taken from credible websites and YouTube thumbnails. In this research, the data is analyzed using Visual Grammar to find out the meaning of the images then is analyzed using Male Gaze to know gender visual represented in media. The result shows that gandrung dancer has a visual oriented role to make the viewer interested to see the media. Gandrung dancer always presents in Banyuwangi Culture Every Week’s pamphlets as cultural symbolism and visual marketing. Gandrung dancer represents an icon of Banyuwangi and beautiful object that raises the intimacy between her and the viewer, since she is familiar for the citizen.
