This research aims to analyze the influence of love on Emily Dickinson’s life as reflected in her selected poems. Love is one of the significant themes in Dickinson’s poetry, expressed through various emotions, including affection, longing, separation, suffering, and spiritual reflection. This study focuses on examining how love is represented in the selected poems and how these representations provide insight into the speaker’s emotional experiences and perspectives on human relationships. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method, using selected poems by Emily Dickinson as the primary sources of data. The data are collected through close reading, note-taking, and identification of words, phrases, imagery, and figurative language related to love. The analysis applies literary approaches to poetic interpretation, particularly theme, symbolism, imagery, and the relationship between poetic speakers and emotional experiences. The discussion explores how love can bring happiness and emotional fulfillment while also producing uncertainty, disappointment, and loneliness. Dickinson’s distinctive use of metaphor, symbolism, and unconventional poetic form contributes to the complexity of these emotional representations. The selected poems are examined to identify recurring patterns in the portrayal of love and to understand how the poetic speakers respond to their emotional circumstances. The analysis also considers the limitations of interpreting a poet’s personal life solely through literary works, recognizing that poetic speakers cannot automatically be identified with the author. Through this approach, the research seeks to demonstrate that love functions as a multifaceted theme in Dickinson’s poetry, reflecting the complexity of human emotions and relationships. In conclusion, this study is expected to provide a deeper understanding of love as a literary theme and of Dickinson’s poetic techniques in expressing emotional experiences.
