Gender Inequality in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Abstract

This study analyzes the representation of gender inequality in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (1997) by J.K. Rowling using Stuart Hall’s theory of representation and Michel Foucault’s discursive approach. This study uses close reading method by focusing on two female characters, Hermione Granger and Professor McGonagall. The findings reveal that gender inequality in the novel is reflected through the distribution of character roles. Although both female characters are portrayed as highly capable and competent, they are more frequently positioned as secondary characters compared to the male characters. This study concludes that J.K. Rowling attempts to challenge gender stereotypes through the portrayal of intelligent and competent female characters. However, the novel’s narrative structure continues to reproduce traditional gender hierarchies.
