Abstract

The scientific argumentation skills of Indonesian junior high school students remain low, as reflected by Indonesia's 2022 PISA science literacy score of 383 points, which is 102 points below the OECD average of 485 points. This study aimed to assess the validity, effectiveness, and practicality of an IoT smart sensorintegrated e-module in improving the scientific argumentation skills of junior high school science students. The study employed the ADDIE development model and was conducted at SMPN 6 Jember during the odd semester of the 2025/2026 academic year, involving 32 students of class VIII G selected through purposive sampling. Research instruments included validation sheets, learning implementation observation sheets, pretest-posttest essay items based on the Osborne et al. (2004) framework, and a student response questionnaire. Validation by three expert validators yielded an average score of 84%, categorized as valid. The practicality of the e-module reached 81% based on observation by three observers, categorized as practical. Effectiveness was measured using the N-gain value of 0.44 (moderate category), with improvements across all indicators: claim (0.76, high), data (0.68, moderate), warrant (0.70, high), and rebuttal (0.29, low). Student responses averaged 87%, categorized as very good. It is concluded that the IoT smart sensor-integrated e-module on the hydrological cycle topic is valid, practical, and effective in improving the scientific argumentation skills of junior high school science students.
