Hubungan Dukungan Sosial terhadap Parental Burnout Ibu dengan Anak Autism Spectrum Disorder di Kabupaten Jember

Abstract

The process of parenting children with autism can increase the risk of experiencing parental burnout. Social support is needed in the process of parenting children with autism. This study aims to identify the relationship between social support and parental burnout among mothers of children with autism. Methods: with a cross-sectional design on 46 mothers of children with autism selected using total sampling. The PBA questionnaire which includes 4 dimensions and 23 items, was used to measure the level of burnout experienced by mothers in the parenting process of children with autism, while the MSPSS questionnaire which includes 3 dimensions and 12 items, was used to measure the social support received by mothers. Data were analyzed using Spearman's rho (CI = 95%). Results: The results showed that the mean age of mothers was 41.5 ± 6.3 years. The age range of children was 7-18 years. The majority of children had a history of speech therapy (56.5%). The majority of respondents did not experience parental burnout (95.7%), and social support was at a high level with a median score of 5.9. The results show a significant relationship between social support and parental burnout (p ≤ 0.05 ; CI = 95% ; r = -0.290). Discussion: These findings indicate there is a significant relationship between social support and parental burnout. Social support acts as a protective factor in reducing parental burnout among mothers of children with ASD. The higher the social support received by mothers, the lower the level of parental burnout experienced.
