Abstract
Ender’s Game is a science fiction novel by Orson Scott Card that tells
about the story of Ender Wiggin who finally becomes a great commander. This
research analyses Ender’s hero’s journey and kind of hero Ender that is presented
in the novel. In order to support the analysis, the writer uses the monomyth theory
by Joseph Campbell.
There are two problems discussed in this research. The first is about the
hero’s journey showed in the novel by the main character, Ender. The second is
what kind of hero is presented in the novel. There are two previous researches
used in this thesis. The first previous research is Heroes of Middle-Earth: J.
Campbell’s Monomyth in J.R.R. Tolkien’s the Lord of the Rings (1945-1955)
written by Tutta Kesti in 2007 and the second is An Analysis on the Monomyth
through Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson: the Lightning Thief written by
Mohammad Sugeng Rahman Hakim in 2015.
This research applies qualitative research which means the sources come
from written words and sentences. There are two kinds of data in this research;
primary and secondary data. Primary data are the sentences, narrations, statements
and quotation in Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game that are related with Ender’s
hero’s journey. The secondary data are taken from books, thesis and internet
sources that are related to the topic.
The result of this research shows that Ender as the main character follows
the monomyth pattern. It is proved by how the separation, initiation and return of
monomyth pattern applied in the Ender’s journey. From the starts, Ender lives in
an ordinary world until he gains his reward and refuses to come back to his
homeland. Ender as a hero in this novel has different characteristics compared to
the other types of hero. He has lack of quality to become a hero. His
characteristics through the story show that he is an Anti-Hero.
