Analysis of Flouted Maxims by Maleficent in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Movie Subtitle

Abstract

This research analyzed the flouted utterances by Maleficent in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil movie. The objectives of this research were: finding the type of flouted maxim with cooperative principle theory, revealing the implied meaning of the flouted utterances with implicature theory, discovering the reasons to flout the maxim with context of situation theory. This research was categorized as the qualitative research and used the descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. The result showed that maxim of quantity has been flouted 3 (20%) times, maxim of quality has been flouted 3 (20%) times, maxim of relation has been flouted 2 (13%) times, maxim of manner has been flouted 4 (27%) times, and double flouted maxim occurred 3 (20%) times. The reason Maleficent flouted the maxims were convincing someone, sarcasm, making promise, assuming, denial, pretending, intimidating, offering something, expressing confusion, teasing, refusal, creating confusion.
