Abstract
Composite materials are combinations of two or more materials that result in
enhanced properties. Coconut fiber has become a potential material for composites.
Its use can help reduce waste that cannot be utilized. Various composite fabrication
methods have been developed, one of which is vacuum infusion. Vacuum infusion
offers the advantage of even resin distribution. This method is efficient in resin
usage and time management. This study aims to analyze which parameters affect
the composite manufacturing process in terms of tensile strength. In data
processing, the Taguchi method is used to determine the contribution of each
parameter. Taguchi L9 (3
4
) is used to design the experiments, followed by S/N ratio
and ANOVA analysis. Based on the experimental results and analysis, it was found
that the significant parameters are fiber orientation and catalyst variation, while
vacuum pressure and fiber volume fraction have no significant effect on tensile
strength. The contributions of each parameter are 83.24% (fiber orientation), 7.33%
(catalyst variation), 1.41% (fiber volume fraction), and 0.74% (vacuum pressure).
The optimal combination of parameters, determined based on the S/N ratio
calculation, is a vacuum pressure of 0.2 bar, fiber volume fraction of 10%, fiber
orientation of 0°, and catalyst of 0.5%. This study provides insight into which
parameters affect the tensile strength of composites using the vacuum-assisted resin
infusion method
