Abstract

Introduction: Chlorpyrifos is an organophosphate pesticide widely used by farmers around the world, including in Indonesia, with imports exceeding 20,000 tons in 2021. Onion, chili, and corn farmers are the most frequent users. Excessive use of chlorpyrifos can cause health problems such as memory disorders, Parkinson's disease, and inflammation due to cholinergic effects. Chlorpyrifos also causes oxidative stress, which adversely affects the eye, contributing to 33.5% of cataract cases in Indonesia in 2014. Objective: To determine the effect of chlorpyrifos exposure on hydrogen peroxide levels in the lenses of male Wistar rat (Rattus norvegicus) eyes. Methods: This research was conducted on Wistar rats for 14 days using a 5 mg/KgBW dose of chlorpyrifos. Rats eye lenses examined to attain the concentration of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) using the colorimetric method. The data were analyzed using an unpaired T-test to determine the difference. Results: The average concentration of H2O2 in pmol/µl was 11.54 ± 2.23 in the control group and 12.99 ± 2.27 in the treatment group. The analysis of the unpaired T-test yielded p = 0.128, which means it is not significant. This study tends to align with the hypothesis that there is an increase in the treatment group, although the results obtained in this study are not significant. Conclusion: There is an increasing trend within H2O2 on the treatment group, but no significant effect of chlorpyrifos exposure on H2O2 levels in the eye lenses of male Wistar rats
