Abstract
Birds are wild animals vulnerable to illegal trade due to high public demand, including the popularity of songbird competitions. This situation threatens their conservation through declining wild populations and places some species under national and international protection. This bird trade takes place in several regions of Indonesia, one of which is Jember Regency. However, the species composition and conservation status of the birds traded in Jember have not yet been reported. This study aims to determine the species composition and conservation status of birds traded in the Jember bird market. Data collection was conducted through field observations and direct documentation of bird species traded at six bird
markets in Jember, including Sawahan, Pakusari, Kalisat, Ajung, Ambulu and Balung . Species identification was based on morphological characteristics, referencing the field guide Birds of Greater Sunda Islands, Indonesia, after which the observation data were organized into tabular forms and the percentage proportions were calculated for each conservation status category. The results of the study indicate the presence of 186 species from 50 families, dominated by the order Passeriformes. According to the IUCN, the majority fall under the Least Concern category (154 species), followed by Near Threatened (11 species), Vulnerable (6 species), Endangered (9 species), and Critically Endangered (3 species). Whereas, based on the CITES, 173 species are classified as Non-
Appendix, 12 species as Appendix II, and 1 species as Appendix I. Furthermore, there are 31 species protected by Indonesian ministry regulation number P.106 2018. In conclusion, the majority of birds traded are classified as low-risk and are not protected; however, the presence of species with a high threat level underscores the need for stricter monitoring and sustained conservation efforts to ensure the survival of wild bird populations.
