Abstract
This research is a sociological study of education that discusses the meaning of
symbols in Islamic boarding school alumni in the process of developing Islamic
education in Jember. So the topic in this research is to discuss the meaning of the
Moro' symbol in the alumni organization of Islamic boarding schools, namely
IKSASS Rayon Jember in the process of developing Islamic education in Jember.
The purpose of this study is to determine the meaning of Moro' among IKSASS
Rayon Jember in the development of Islamic education in Jember. This study uses
the theory of Meaning from George Herbert Mead in the book Mind, Self, and
Society. The method used in this study is qualitative with an Ethnographic
approach. The data collection process used in this study is observation, interviews,
and documentation. The selection of informants in this study was carried out using
a purposive sampling technique. The results of this study indicate that the meaning
of Moro' among Islamic boarding school alumni has an influence on the
development of Islamic education in Jember. The Moro' symbol which was
originally a saying from Kiai As'ad has now become a value that becomes the
character or identity of the members of Rayon IKSASS Jember. In the process of its
interpretation, Moro' experienced a shift in meaning caused by the social dynamics
surrounding the members of the IKSASS Jember Rayon. Consequently, there are
two meanings of Moro' in the process of developing Islamic education in Jember:
Moro' in the form of teaching and Moro' in the form of providing support.
Therefore, in the process of implementing the meaning of Moro' in the development
of Islamic education, there are two types of activities carried out by alumni:
conducting teaching and learning activities and establishing educational
institutions.
