Abstract

Introduction: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a non-communicable disease that requires long-term treatment through hemodialysis. The frequency of hemodialysis, which is typically performed twice a week for an indefinite period, presents a significant challenge for patients. These conditions may affect patients’ psychological adaptation, particularly their level of self-acceptance. Self-acceptance is an important factor that helps patients adapt to changes in their health condition. This study aimed to examine the relationship between the frequency and duration of hemodialysis with self-acceptance in patients undergoing hemodialysis at RSD dr. Soebandi. Method: This study used a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of 166 patients who fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria. A total of 84 patients undergoing hemodialysis were selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected using the Acceptance Illness Scale (AIS) questionnaire and analyzed using Spearman’s rho correlation coefficient due to the data’s non-normal distribution. Result and Discussion: Of the 84 respondents, the mean age was 48.19 ± 10.9 years. The majority (92.9%) undergoing hemodialysis twice a week, and 58.3% had been on hemodialysis for more than two years. The majority (50.0%) were categorized as having high self-acceptance. Statistical analysis using Spearman’s rho test revealed a significant association between the frequency and duration of hemodialysis and self-acceptance (p = 0.001; p = 0.005). Odds ratios of 0.365 and 0.307 indicate a weak association, indicating that while the frequency and duration of hemodialysis contribute to increased self-acceptance, however there are other factors are more dominant. This finding implies that other factors, such as social support, may also influence self-acceptance in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Conclusion: There is a correlation between the frequency and duration of hemodialysis with self-acceptance in patients undergoing hemodialysis at RSD dr. Soebandi.
