Abstract

The use of pesticides in agricultural activities is a significant risk factor for farmers' health, especially affecting the nervous system. This study aims to analyze the relationship between pesticide exposure and neurological disorders among rice farmers in Suren Village, Jember Regency. A quantitative approach with observational analytical methods and a cross-sectional design was used. A total of 86 farmers were selected using cluster random sampling based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected through interviews and observations on individual characteristics, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and pesticide exposure, then analyzed using the chi-square test and Fisher's exact test. The results showed that most respondents were aged 45–55 years, were active smokers, and had more than five years of farming experience. Bivariate analysis found a significant relationship between neurological disorders and length of service (p = 0.009) and spraying frequency (p = 0.012), while other variables such as pesticide type, dosage, spraying duration, spraying method, and PPE use did not show a significant relationship. Common neurological symptoms identified included fatigue, limb weakness, difficulty concentrating, and forgetfulness. This study highlights that chronic pesticide exposure during long periods of work increases the risk of neurological disorders in farmers. Therefore, preventive measures such as the implementation of integrated pest panagement and increased awareness of the proper use of PPE are essential to reduce health risks.
