Abstract

This study aims to analyze how a young kiai builds religious and socio-political authority within the rural community of Kramat Sukoharjo Village, Tanggul District, Jember Regency. The research focuses on Gus Toha as a young kiai who is actively involved not only in religious activities but also in various social issues within the community. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed through observation, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results show that the authority of the young kiai is formed through continuous social interaction and active involvement in the everyday life of the community. Religious activities such as Islamic study sessions, consultations, and healing practices become important spaces in building relationship between the kiai and society. In addition, Gus Toha’s involvement in social activities, including community assistance programs and social meditation, strengthens his position within the village social structure. The close interaction between the kiai and the community fosters trust and social recognition, which gradually shapes his religious and socio-political authority. This study demonstrates that the authority of a young kiai develops not only through religious roles, but also through social engagement within rural society.
