Abstract

Research on expressive speech acts in film is interesting because film dialogue represents the use of language in everyday interactions. This study focuses on the expressive speech acts of characters in the film "Lebih dari Selamanya" by M. Amrul Ummami. This film was chosen because it presents the expression of feelings between characters in a simple manner, through short utterances with strong contextual meaning, thus presenting a rich variety of expressive speech acts for analysis. This study aims to describe the form, function, and mode of expressive speech acts used by the characters in the film. This research is a qualitative study with a descriptive design. The data are speech segments containing expressive speech acts and their context. The data source is the 96-minute film "Lebih dari Selamanya" by M. Amrul Ummami. Data collection techniques used documentation techniques through listening, transcription, identification, and data inventory. Data analysis used the Milles and Huberman analysis model (in Sugiyono, 2019), which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that the forms of expressive speech acts found include greetings, praise or congratulations, condolences, apologies, thanks, anger, complaining, sarcasm, teasing, and doubt. The functions of expressive speech acts include praising, thanking, complaining, congratulating, apologizing, motivating, sarcasm, expressing anger, expressing doubt, teasing, and greetings. The modes of expressive speech acts found include declarative, optative, imperative, interrogative, obligative, desiderative, and conditional. These findings indicate that expressive speech acts in the film not only function to reveal the emotional state of the characters but also to clarify relationships between characters and strengthen the storyline. The conclusion of this study indicates that the film is relevant and rich in data for the study of pragmatics, particularly expressive speech acts.
