Abstract

The availability of clean water is one of the supports for human life. One of the parameters of water quality is the content of pollutants such as phosphate produced from laundry activities. The maximum phosphate content in water is 2 mg/L. This study aims to determine the effect of variations in the concentration of H2SO4 activator and the thickness of the edamame peels activated carbon filter media in reducing phosphate levels. The study includes the manufacture of carbon from edamame peel, activation with H2SO4 concentrations of 0.3 M, 0.7 M and 1.1 M, preparation of the filtration reactor, upflow filtration process, and testing of sample water. The results showed the highest phosphate removal efficiency of 86% in reactor M2 with a media thickness of 15 cm at an activator concentration of 1.1 M and the lowest of 50.78% in reactor M1 with a media thickness of 10 cm at a concentration of 0.3 M. Multiple linear regression analysis showed a significant relationship between the reduction in phosphate levels with the activator concentration. Thus, it can be concluded that variations in H2SO4 activator concentration can affect the reduction of phosphate levels during the filtration process.
