Abstract

Color plays a pivotal role in the cinematography of Blade Runner 2049, shaping mood, atmosphere, and audience perception. The film's success lies in its ability to create an immersive atmosphere through detailed production design, atmospheric music by Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch, and strong performances from the cast. This qualitative research examines how Blade Runner 2049 uses color to convey emotions, employing observation and literature study as data collection methods. The study begins by watching the film and taking screenshots to analyze aspects of cinematography and color. From 139 initial data points, the selection is reduced to 13 focused examples. These examples highlight the use of specific color palettes and lighting techniques to communicate character emotions and story nuances effectively. Ultimately, the research underscores that Blade Runner 2049 utilizes color to create a complex and immersive atmosphere, demonstrating its vital role in enhancing the film's narrative and emotional depth.
