Abstract
Improperly managed waste from industrial production activities is a major cause of environmental pollution. The coffee agro-industry is one sector that generates significant amounts of waste, largely because it remains locked into a linear economic model. The accumulation of coffee waste can be mitigated by utilizing it to create by-products. This strategy not only addresses waste issues but also generates economic value for the agro-industry. To achieve strong economic, environmental, and social performance, the coffee agro-industry requires sustainable practices and a business model aligned with these goals. This study aims to identify material flows and the existing business model at Rumah Kopi Banjarsengon (RKB), design a new business model using the Circular Business Model Canvas (CBMC), analyze the profitability of coffee waste-based by-products, and assess the business sustainability of these by-products within the CBMC framework. The research involved identifying material flows in the production process, mapping the existing Business Model Canvas (BMC), re-engineering BMC elements into a CBMC, analyzing product profitability using Net B/C ratios and payback periods, and evaluating sustainability across economic, social, and environmental dimensions. The results indicate that RKB employs two coffee processing methods natural and full wash, both of which generate solid and liquid waste that is currently underutilized. Potential new business ventures based on RKB's coffee waste include liquid organic fertilizer (POC), animal feed, cascara tea bags, and briquettes. Each product offers economic benefits, with estimated monthly returns of Rp 2,114,194 for POC, Rp 841.619 for animal feed, Rp 997,619 for cascara tea bags, and Rp 4.397.634 for briquettes, resulting in a total monthly revenue of Rp 8.351.000 from by-products. Sustainability analysis confirms that the proposed business model based on the CBMC is sustainable. Based on the analysis of profitability and sustainability, the CBMC-based business is viable.
