The Representation of Climate Change In The EFL Textbook For Senior High Schools

Abstract

Climate change is a global issue that affects Indonesia through environmental problems such as floods, droughts, landslides, and forest fires. To increase awareness, climate change education plays an important role, especially for adolescents as potential agents of environmental change. In Indonesia, climate change education has been integrated into the Merdeka Curriculum and can be applied in English learning through textbooks, reading texts, and classroom activities. Merdeka Curriculum through four elements: impacts, causes, adaptation, and mitigation. Education plays an important role in preparing adolescents as future environmental agents. One way to implement climate change education is through textbooks, which provide learning materials through texts, images, and activities. Textbooks, especially ELT textbooks, are not only used to develop language skills but also to introduce social and environmental issues. However, previous studies show that climate change content in EFL textbooks still needs more consistent and contextual representation. Previous studies show that EFL textbooks represent environmental issues through verbal and visual elements, but climate change content still needs more consistent and locally relevant materials. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the representation of climate change in the twelfth-grade ELT textbook “Life Today” using content analysis proposed by Cohen (2007). This research highlights the role of textbooks in promoting students’ awareness of climate change issues.
