Abstract

Rhinosinusitis according to the criteria is a disease characterized by inflammation of the nose and paranasal sinuses with the presence of two or more symptoms within a period of at least 12 weeks. Complaints felt by patients generally include nasal congestion, facial pain, and decreased ability to smell. Some of the factors that cause rhinosinusitis include allergies, immunodeficiency, anatomical abnormalities of the nose, viruses, bacteria and irritants. With foreign objects entering, the nose becomes irritated. Because of this, the sinuses will produce mucus in very large quantities resulting in blockage of the paranasal sinuses. Treating patients affected by this disease can be cured with medication, but there are some cases where patients are resistant to drugs, so Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (ESS) is performed to relieve infection, one of which is Sphenoidotomy surgery. Sphenoidotomy is a technique performed by making an opening in the anterior wall of the sphenoid sinus or by enlarging the natural ostium of the sphenoid sinus. By providing an opening or hole in the sphenoid sinus, the air flow in the nose can flow more smoothly. Before performing the actual operation, fluid flow simulation can be performed. This study aims to measure the difference in airflow before and after Sphenoidotomy surgery using the finite volume method with the help of MATLAB and ANSYS software. With the simulation, it can be seen how the difference in air flow before and after Sphenoidotomy surgery, and how the influence of the diameter of the nasal cavity on the speed of air flow in the human nasal cavity.
