Abstract

Indonesian language is a compulsory subject in every educational institution. At the end of Phase C, the learning outcomes for the reading and viewing elements specify that students are expected to identify the main ideas of descriptive, narrative, and expository texts, which includes locating and identifying information within a paragraph as well as additional information provided by the publisher that is appropriate for the students' grade level. However, a problem identified at SDN 1 Karangsari Banyuwangi is that students experience difficulty in extracting key information from reading texts. This difficulty is primarily attributed to students' lack of focus and tendency to engage in unrelated thoughts during reading activities. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the SQ3R method on reading comprehension skills among fifth-grade students at SDN 1 Karangsari Banyuwangi. This research employs a pre-experimental design, specifically the posttest-only control group design. Data collection was conducted in stages through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the hypothesis testing show a significance value (2-tailed) of 0.021 < 0.05. Based on the hypothesis testing criteria, it can be concluded that the null hypothesis (𝐻₀) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (𝐻ₐ) is accepted, indicating a statistically significant difference between the posttest scores of the control group and the experimental group. Furthermore, the average posttest score of the experimental group (62.86) was higher than that of the control group (48.95). Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the SQ3R method has a significant effect on improving reading comprehension skills among fifth-grade students at SDN 1 Karangsari Banyuwangi
